Since then, the
Swell organ has been lengthened from ‘short’ to ‘full’ compass, a balanced swell
pedal mechanism has been fitted and Hele
and Co of Plymouth replaced one of the Walker
Swell stops with a Mixture. An
electric blower was added in the 1950’s, but a plan, also in the
1950’s, to electrify the mechanical action, detach the console and carry out
various ‘tonal improvements’ mercifully failed due to lack of finance.
It's the current
organist's passionately held view that instruments of this type and quality
should not be ‘improved’ at the transient whims of organists and organ
builders, and it is to the credit of its 145 years of history that Sir James would
still recognise it as substantially ‘his’ instrument.
The organ has
very recently undergone a full 'wear and tear' restoration by Lance Foy & Co.
of Truro, who are now also responsible for its tuning and maintenance.
